As stated in our last post: situated in a luxurious historic estate surrounded by the prosperous town of Scarsdale, the 2013 Designer Showhouse of Westchester is a hub for a number of talented design innovators. The Showhouse itself is running from May 1^st to June 9^th, with the following hours: Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Below is an all new selection of photographs from the Showhouse and details regarding the associated designers.

Exploring everyday pragmatic options with the flair of cosmopolitanism, Rachel Laxer uses her eclectic insight to develop international spaces of wonder.

Barbara Bell wields her expertise to create beautiful interiors such that she was a recipient of the Country Furniture Award.

 Applying two decades of interior design cabapilitites, Jacqueline Hosford takes pride in craftmanship and attention to detail above all else.

Aim for the highest luxury! The Anthony and Olanow Design Group has worked to expand the connection between stark functionality and the beauty of the environment for over 20 years.

With a distinct emphasis on forging a comprehensive backdrop, The Wakefield Design Center is the place for trade professionals in this day and age. 

Rooms by Zoya B presents and elegant yet whimsical outlook regarding children's furniture design. Additionaly, their heirloom quality designer pieces ensure that every luxurious space will last a lifetime.

Since their founding in 2003, the Mendelson Group has steadily held true to their eclectic mission statement. Combining both interior architecture and décor, they aim to develop enduring yet enthusiastic spaces to fit the needs of any client.

 

Following a departure from the Fashion Industry in 1999, Ken Gemes established an aesthetically minimalistic approach that grew with the resurgence of the modern family. With functionality at the forefront, Gemes is highly known for his seamless manipulation of subdued colors to express the hospitable nature of a genuine home.

With remembrance of her southern youth, Carey Karlan of Last Detail Interior Design is always willing to translate the desires of her clients into beautiful interiors. Her adaptable design principles have only expanded with every new Showhouse participation.

Emphasizing an air of sophistication, Karen Houghton Interiors has been in circulation since 1986. Their primary goal when working with clients is the incorporation of the practical and personable to fit any patron’s wishes.

Debra Gottlieb of Finelines Interiors has proven with her compositions that compromise is not always necessary. Her prominent attention to detail and substantial resources, coupled with great conceptual versatility is reflective of an engaging vision that is appropriate for any home.

Lillian August represents over 25 years of design expertise. Her passionate projects incorporate both her experiences and her inventive nature as she presents a new interpretation of classic interiors.

Beginning in 2001, Elissa Grayer has administered residential designs across the east coast with elegance and distinction. She believes that the education of a designer’s clients is highly beneficial to the constructive process overall.

Designer Showhouse of Westchester - Sleeping Beauty II: Before and After

Spring is in the air! The moment Zoya arrived in Scarsdale for the 2013 Designer Show House of Westchester; she was struck with the immense liveliness of the environment. In relational contrast with the bustling, humid surroundings of her home in Manhattan, the crisp nature of Scarsdale was an invigorating change that could only lead to something special. Almost immediately this fresh backdrop as well as the beautiful historic estate donated for the occasion, made way to inspire Zoya’s room design.

What is usually associated with spring? Rebirth, renewal, and renaissance amongst others. Coincidentally, the Gustavian style that Zoya’s premier Princess Collection is based on was historically considered a great experimental break from the eclectic Renaissance period in Sweden. With the furnishing component relatively planned, Zoya set off to implicate the best thematic concept for her space. To her it seemed obvious with one look at the area: spring!

With rebirth comes the revival of hibernating plants and wildlife that of which creates a bountiful cascade of green hues that illuminate the world’s landscapes. Since Zoya is highly fond of storytelling, her next thought led her straight back to the Sleeping Beauty, one of her favorites. She decided to pick up where she left off in “Aurora’s Nursery” at the 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse, giving the room a slightly more mature edge to match her hypothetically growing girl. The revitalizing color scheme in reminiscent of when, in the story, the spell on Aurora is broken and the kingdom’s vitality is restored. After working with her own child, Zoya began to strive to combine Interior Design and fairytales to culminate an exciting educational experience for every child as they grow up.

Designer Showhouse of Westchester

Since the formation of her business, Zoya has been involved with a number of charitable events. This year she is delighted to be a contributor to the 2013 Designer Showhouse of Westchester, where over 20 designers are showcasing their work in a beautiful historic estate. The participants include Anthony and Olanow Design Group, Barbara Bell Interiors, Cast Classics, Debra Funt Interiors, Donna Benedetto Designs, Dunn & Tighe Interiors, Elissa Grayer Interior Design LLC, Finelines Interiors, Gail Green Interiors, Jacqueline Hosford Interior Design, LLC, Karen Houghton Interiors, Ken Gemes Interiors, Kim Freeman Style & Design, Last Detail by Carey Karlan, Lillian August, Maggie McManus Kitchens & Baths, Mendelson Group, Rachel Laxer Interiors, Ltd., Rooms by Zoya B and Wakefield Design Center. 

The house itself is located in the luxurious town of Scarsdale, and the opulent home boasts 8,722 square feet, culminating 8 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. The remarkable property is abundant with architectural equilibrium as combined Gregorian and imperial British styles implicate visual unity and minimal detailing. Overall it paints the perfect picture of a solid, symmetric home. The show will be running from May 1^st to June 9^th, with the following hours: Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Show House itself benefits Cerebral Palsy of Westchester; a non-profit that has been working nonstop since 1949 to advance essential services to both children and adults suffering from cerebral palsy and other neurological disabilities. Defining several chronic circumstances, cerebral palsy entails the damage of a few specific segments within the brain – mostly pertaining to overall muscle development. With approximately 8,000 new infants being diagnosed every year, the services provided by Cerebral Palsy of Westchester are even more vital now than ever before. Every baby identified deserves the support, recreation, rehabilitation, vocational training, crucial educational services, and love that Cerebral Palsy of Westchester continually provides.

Princess - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Princess is such a gorgeous piece in the Sleeping Beauty Ballet
Fairy Series. She is who all of the gifts are given to and she
embodies all of the special virtues. Her vibrant and bright pink dress
is girly and fun and is so beautifully shown from the back. She is
demurely draped with a light shawl and a sweet tiara adorns her
gorgeous head of curls. She is calm and quietly composed as she stands
tall and proud. All little girls can look up to the princess as a role
model and someone that they want to emulate.

The Lilac Fairy - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Lilac Fairy is so special because she
represents a very important virtue. Her gift to the Princess is
Wisdom. Her fanciful pose shows her sprinkling fairy dust with a wand
which represents the action of providing wisdom and guidance.
Imagination, artistry and creativity all come from wisdom and are so
important to growing girls. The wisdom to know good from bad and right
from wrong will be so easy to learn when the guidance comes from a
beautiful fairy dressed in an amazing lilac flowing dress. Next to the
other faires she is the leaders and is depicted that way. She is
different from the others and she certainly stands out. 

"May wisdom guide you as a lantern in the dark" is the quotation paired with this

Carabosse - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

Carabosse is the evil fairy that was angry that she was not invited to meet the baby princess with a special virtue. Although she is considered evil and sinister, she also represents a mischievous and curious side that all little princess' have. She is dark and a little wicked. Her dark ballet slipper and tights are so unlike the other fairy ballerinas so she stands out in a different way. She embodies power and mystery, which is clearly depicted in her slithery pose and curious posture.

The quotation she is paired with is "Here's to long naps and princely kisses"

The Fairy of Vitality - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Fairy of Vitality is the most whimsical and playful of all of the fairy ballerinas in the series. She is young at heart and dances to the beat of her own drum. The way her blue dress moves as she leaps with glee makes this wall decor so special. She represents the virtue of being carefree, confident, and comfortable in your own skin. Her hair floating behind her in a loose ponytail of curls as well as her leap of joy make this a hard piece to ignore. Any little princess can relate to the feeling that this fairy ballerina art demonstrates and that makes it so special.

The Fairy of Songs is fun and playful. Her gift is that of song and eloquence. Having your own voice and knowing how to use it is so important for any young woman. Being proud of who you are can come out through song and words in such a lovely way. The fairy ballerina so beautifully plays a tune in this piece and this represents her gift of song. You can almost hear her sound and see her dance. She is as bright and yellow as sunshine and is so fun to look at. She stands proud and wants everyone to hear her loud and clear.

The Fairy of Generosity represents the virtue of generosity. This is such an important virtue for little girls to grow up to have because being generous means that you are grateful and humble for every gift that you have. Her pose is demure and lady like and the stunning green color she is wearing sparkles like a brilliant emerald. Although it is so bright and colorful it is still calm and refined. Her simple stance is peaceful and kind. You can almost imagine her movement and choreigraphy to be just as composed and lovely. So many good things come from being generous and this fairy ballerina represents that.

Baby Nursery Decorating Ideas - Start with a Crib

So often our clients don't know the style of nursery that they want to have, but they do know that they want high quality furniture that is safe, stylish, and timeless. There are so many options for beautiful and unique cribs on the market right now and that is a great place to start finding the direction and style of your nursery. Once you have chosen a crib the rest of the pieces that you need like a changing table and a glider will fall into place. The Princess Crib: This is our signature luxury crib, which is designed with, an updated Classic Swedish style. The Fairy of Purity - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Fairy of Purity represents the virtue of being pure and innocent. This teaches young girls to be humble and selfless in order to grow as respectable young woman. This can be incorporated nicely into any color scheme because it is painted with cool white and blue tones that would compliment any space nicely. This fairy ballerina's pose is so delicate and dainty.

"May your thoughts be as pure as freshly fallen snow"

is the quotation that this fairy is paired with and I think that is a wonderful message to send to girls. 

This fairy can be hung with the other fairies alongside it or alone above our signature Princess dresser. A sparkling Murano chandelier and gorgeous Aurora's bedding will pair nicely with it as well.

The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series was a collaboration between the internationally acclaimed, award-winning artist Misha Lenn, and the New York City based Interior Designer Zoya Bograd, ASID. The concept first appeared in ZoyaB’s Sleeping Beauty inspired nursery, “Aurora’s Room”, at the 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse, benefiting the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club.

“I chose to interpret the stunning first act of Tchaikovsky’s ballet with the hope of creating a luxurious space in which any little girl could feel just like a princess, and I was fortunate enough to work with Misha Lenn, who shared my vision” - ZoyaB.

Within the first act of the ballet, the King Florestan XXIV and his queen invited the fairies of the land to their palace for their newborn’s christening. They wished for the good fairies to become godmothers to the baby Aurora. As the fairies arrived and began to bestow the gifts of their virtue upon the young princess, the wicked fairy Carabosse interrupted the ceremony. Angry that she had been left off the invitation list, Carabosse cursed Aurora, promising that one day she would prick her finger and perish. Although the curse was considered unbreakable, the Lilac fairy was able to use her magic to exchange Aurora’s imminent demise for a long slumber that could only be revoked with a prince’s kiss.

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Made in America

The ZoyaB Collection is Made in America. With outsourcing often considered as the new standard of manufacturing, clients can find themselves pleasantly surprised to learn that all of the furniture I design is handmade right here in the United States. Personally, I find this extremely important; both in terms of enhancing our economic state, by supporting local factories, but also for the high safety standards that we have always enjoyed in our own products. The ZoyaB Princess Collection is made entirely of solid wood, and is designed and manufactured to last for a lifetime. Since busy parents always have their hands full, I have made sure that all of the drawers have dovetail joints fitted with full extension under-mount drawer glides that close softly, even with just the touch of an elbow. We also offer a variety of safe, environmentally friendly finishes (the Gustavian antique white option was used here at the Kips Bay Show house), that are entirely formaldehyde and VOC free.  

Comfort for all, including the new parents, is essential in any design theme. There's no cozier way to settle in and hold your baby than in our pillow soft gliders and swivel chairs. 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Wall Textures

One of the most critical techniques to make a room pop is by coloring in the walls, literally! A room may have a beautiful setting with timeless furniture and accessories and moldings, but if you don't start with an interesting backdrop, this pieces become impersonal - they could fit in any space. 

I saw a lot of beautiful textured wall coverings in rooms this year at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Each room had a sense of theme because the walls (whether painted, laquered or papered) set the stage for the room. 

Lets take a look at some of my favorite textured-walled rooms at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House of 2012...

The green lacquered ceiling by Thom Filicia made everything in the room illuminate to a much higher level. 

Venetian plaster in Bunny Williams room is one of the most expensive yet beautiful wall treatments a home can have. As seen here in Raji RM & Associates room, Raji used venetian plaster to highlight the elegant library without stealing the show entirely.

Charles Pavarini III, was the king of drama this year! His Red, White and Black room really stole the show and it all started with his primary red lacquered walls.

Timothy & Associates Interior Design - This is the best venetian plaster I have ever seen!

Wood paneling wallpaper is always the easiest and sometimes cheapest way to create texture in a room. Love what Charlotte Moss did with these walls!

The tone on tone venetian plaster walls of different texture gave a beautiful formality to the traditional media room.

More lacquered walls by Mark Hampton LLC....

What is more fun and indestructible for a children's room than a wall they are actually ALLOWED to draw on by Andrew Tedesco?! The hallways leading to my Sleeping Beauty room was actually painted with a chalkboard finish that allows kids and adults alike to draw on their walls without getting in trouble! 

Lastly the Sleeping Beauty room. Paint, glaze, stencil and bedazzle are the most personal way to create an imaginative playground for your little loved one. Here I stenciled flowers against a baby pink-painted/glazed wall and placed Swarovski crystals for the buds. Every princess deserves a castle, and their rooms are the most sacred place of them all.

Try adding texture to your walls! Remember nothing is permanent when it comes to wall treatments, so have fun! Try some DIY tricks like stenciling the way I did!

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Murano Glass

A few years ago, I took a trip to Murano, Italy with an idea for a mirror that I wanted to have made. Completely at random, I stopped into an artist's studio with a sketch and asked the artist if he could make it for me. Imagine my shock when he announced that he was the great-great grandson of Pietro Toso who, along with his six sons, had established the famous Fratelli Toso glass-making company in 1854! For centuries, Fratelli Toso has had a reputation for being one of the most esteemed glass making companies in Murano, with several pieces in collections at museums around the world. I was thrilled to now be a part of this wonderful history and I continue to offer many exquisite Murano glass mirrors in my own collection. The Juliette mirror was featured in my "Sleeping Beauty" nursery at the 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show house. Surrounded by the magic of the Fairies artwork, it reflects the beauty of the theme as well as the soft serenity of the entire room.

I think that Murano glass is so special that I like to put at least a touch of it in any room. All of the exquisite knobs on the doors or drawers in my Princess Collection are Murano glass, as are several lamps that I carry.

The Tall Cinderella lamp is the featured light in the nursery; it can serve as a reading lamp by which to read your favorite story or just to warm the night with a soft glow as your baby sleeps.

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Funky Chairs

While walking around the Kips Bay Decorator Show House for what seemed like the hundredth time, I started noticing things in each room that I hadn't noticed before. Things in particular that kept catching my eye were "Funky Chairs." I noticed chairs that are different in shape, color, and finish - chairs that were more a piece of art than anything else. Some chairs I wouldn't want to sit in because it is far to nice to have one's behind in! 

I found this chair in Bunny Williams' room at the show house. Bunny decorated this room with Brian McCarthy and David Kleinberg in honor of Albert Hadley, and they didn't disappoint! This chair, I especially liked because I can see it used in a kids room. Maybe an Alice in Wonderland theme?--I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date! 

This chair was in Jamie Drake's room and it's marvelous! It tricks your brain when you look at it, kind of like an optical illusion. 

This is one of my favorite kids chair, I used it in my Sleeping Beauty room at the show house. It's a French inspired chair that is charming and perfect for a little princess. The embroidered initial of the girl's name adds the perfect touch!

David Scott's room was a masculine office. I love the way he accessorized his room and this chair added a nice pop of blue. 

The next room was Raji Radhakrishnan's jawdropping interior. This stool was in the hallway, the legs are what caught my eye. The stool is whimsical and fairytale like, something that would be found in a Disney Princess room! 

I don't think I have to talk about this next chair that I found in Raji's room, this is a work of art that makes a statement all on it's own. 

This swing was used by Shawn Henderson's, it's a room that is a playground for grown-ups.

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Creatures in Design

The 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York City was filled with lots of mythical creatures this year! Almost every interior designer's room had a whimsical figurine of some sort that blended beautifully with the theme of the room.

We all know how much the Bograd Kid's line loves fairy-tale creatures so we decided to make a virtual tour at some of my favorite whimsically-designed rooms and the animals that made them so...

These hand knitted Missoni bunnies are the perfect touch to the Coffinier Ku Design Missoni inspired rooms. In fact, they remind me so much of the hand-knitted dolls sold on the Bograd Kid's Website.

For just $34 you too can have a soft hand-knitted doll in the arms of your children. Our ZOOK is so comfy and cuddly! 

These suspended stained-glass butterflies added such a beautiful effect to the Coffinier Ku Missoni inspired room.

As well as these butterflies from Charles Pavarini III master bedroom.

Our own silk and goose-down teddy bears are not only cuddly and sweet but also have a touch of glam. Find them on the Rooms by ZoyaB website. 

Interior Designer Laura Bohn also had the pleasure of decorating a children's bedroom for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House. These newspaper paper-maiche animal busts are so playful and perfect for a child's first room!

If you love these safari inspired busts then you will love our Safari Themed Watercolored Paintings. Each one is unique and hand painted making your child's first piece of art most special.

Charlotte Moss's room was quite a spectacle! What stood out to me most was the amazing owl sculpture in the middle of her own secret garden. 

Owls are known to be the brightest animals in the forest, so it only makes sense to decorate your child's room in the most fashionable way possible, with  knowledge. I just adore this Owl Rug, and for only $350.00 it works perfectly in both a boy and girls room!

Timothy & Associates Interior Design - Daum and Georges Braque, Zetes and Calais purple and white crystal limited edition of 8 sculptures are unique in both design and form. 

Lastly,Todd Alexander Romano's room was by far one of my favorites. His use of a bronze giraffe bust was a show stopper. 

And if you just can't get enough, why not snuggle up to a life-size giraffe stuffed animal! Art is always the most unique when life sized.

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Center Stage: The Princess Crib

Princess Aurora herself could not have had a more luxurious place in which to nestle and to dream! Part of the newly introduced Princess Collection, at Architectural Digest Home Design Show last March, the luxury baby crib is a rhapsody of comfort and elegance that had many at the show remarking that they wished they had one like it for themselves:) The custom tufting on the head and footboard was inspired by an antique chair I fell in love with during a trip to Italy; it calls out with an invitation for all to touch.  

The mattress fits snugly and firmly ( as all mattresses for babies should ) and is covered in a wealth of soft and sumptuous Dupioni silk bedding.

The signature pearl accents along each border of the crib ( as well as the rest of the pieces in the collection ) lend a finish of jewels.  Because every Prince or Princess deserves a crown; we completed the royal touch by adding this ceiling hung crown draped in silk and held with Murano glass tie-backs.

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Fairies

I truly believe that design and education work together beautifully in a child's room. Colors, textiles, lighting, artwork, accessories and themes; each of these design elements can spark a child's curiosity and will provide limitless opportunities for parents to engage and to teach.  In the story of "Sleeping Beauty", the Fairies not only bring gifts to the baby Princess, they also offer invaluable lessons that have lasted throughout time.  In keeping with the "old world" theme, I found the original 1921 ballet costume designs by the incomparable Leon Bakst and used them as inspiration to create the Fairy Artwork in celebration of children everywhere.  

My interpretation of the Fairies’ offerings are below :  

Fairy of Purity - "May your thoughts be as pure as the freshly fallen snow"

Fairy of Vitality - "May you remain forever as carefree as the wind"

Fairy of Generosity - "May your generosity flow like a river in spring"

Fairy of Song - "May your song open hearts like flowers in bloom"

Fairy of Bravery - "May your bravery be bold as a lion in youth"

The Lilac Fairy (Wisdom) - "May wisdom guide you like a lantern in the dark"

Carabosse (Fairy of Evil) - "Here's to long naps and princely kisses" ( the parental sense of humor:)
