Explore the Designer Showhouse of Westchester: Part I

            Situated in a luxurious historic estate surrounded by the prosperous town of Scarsdale, the 2013 Designer Showhouse of Westchester is a hub for a number of talented design innovators. The Showhouse itself is running from May 1^st to June 9^th, with the following hours: Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Below is a selection of photographs from the Showhouse and details regarding the associated designers.

Since their founding in 2003, the Mendelson Group has steadily held true to their eclectic mission statement. Combining both interior architecture and décor, they aim to develop enduring yet enthusiastic spaces to fit the needs of any client.

 

Following a departure from the Fashion Industry in 1999, Ken Gemes established an aesthetically minimalistic approach that grew with the resurgence of the modern family. With functionality at the forefront, Gemes is highly known for his seamless manipulation of subdued colors to express the hospitable nature of a genuine home.

With remembrance of her southern youth, Carey Karlan of Last Detail Interior Design is always willing to translate the desires of her clients into beautiful interiors. Her adaptable design principles have only expanded with every new Showhouse participation.

Emphasizing an air of sophistication, Karen Houghton Interiors has been in circulation since 1986. Their primary goal when working with clients is the incorporation of the practical and personable to fit any patron’s wishes.

Debra Gottlieb of Finelines Interiors has proven with her compositions that compromise is not always necessary. Her prominent attention to detail and substantial resources, coupled with great conceptual versatility is reflective of an engaging vision that is appropriate for any home.

Lillian August represents over 25 years of design expertise. Her passionate projects incorporate both her experiences and her inventive nature as she presents a new interpretation of classic interiors.

Beginning in 2001, Elissa Grayer has administered residential designs across the east coast with elegance and distinction. She believes that the education of a designer’s clients is highly beneficial to the constructive process overall.

Designer Showhouse of Westchester - Sleeping Beauty II: Before and After

Spring is in the air! The moment Zoya arrived in Scarsdale for the 2013 Designer Show House of Westchester; she was struck with the immense liveliness of the environment. In relational contrast with the bustling, humid surroundings of her home in Manhattan, the crisp nature of Scarsdale was an invigorating change that could only lead to something special. Almost immediately this fresh backdrop as well as the beautiful historic estate donated for the occasion, made way to inspire Zoya’s room design.

What is usually associated with spring? Rebirth, renewal, and renaissance amongst others. Coincidentally, the Gustavian style that Zoya’s premier Princess Collection is based on was historically considered a great experimental break from the eclectic Renaissance period in Sweden. With the furnishing component relatively planned, Zoya set off to implicate the best thematic concept for her space. To her it seemed obvious with one look at the area: spring!

With rebirth comes the revival of hibernating plants and wildlife that of which creates a bountiful cascade of green hues that illuminate the world’s landscapes. Since Zoya is highly fond of storytelling, her next thought led her straight back to the Sleeping Beauty, one of her favorites. She decided to pick up where she left off in “Aurora’s Nursery” at the 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse, giving the room a slightly more mature edge to match her hypothetically growing girl. The revitalizing color scheme in reminiscent of when, in the story, the spell on Aurora is broken and the kingdom’s vitality is restored. After working with her own child, Zoya began to strive to combine Interior Design and fairytales to culminate an exciting educational experience for every child as they grow up.

Designer Showhouse of Westchester

Since the formation of her business, Zoya has been involved with a number of charitable events. This year she is delighted to be a contributor to the 2013 Designer Showhouse of Westchester, where over 20 designers are showcasing their work in a beautiful historic estate. The participants include Anthony and Olanow Design Group, Barbara Bell Interiors, Cast Classics, Debra Funt Interiors, Donna Benedetto Designs, Dunn & Tighe Interiors, Elissa Grayer Interior Design LLC, Finelines Interiors, Gail Green Interiors, Jacqueline Hosford Interior Design, LLC, Karen Houghton Interiors, Ken Gemes Interiors, Kim Freeman Style & Design, Last Detail by Carey Karlan, Lillian August, Maggie McManus Kitchens & Baths, Mendelson Group, Rachel Laxer Interiors, Ltd., Rooms by Zoya B and Wakefield Design Center. 

The house itself is located in the luxurious town of Scarsdale, and the opulent home boasts 8,722 square feet, culminating 8 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. The remarkable property is abundant with architectural equilibrium as combined Gregorian and imperial British styles implicate visual unity and minimal detailing. Overall it paints the perfect picture of a solid, symmetric home. The show will be running from May 1^st to June 9^th, with the following hours: Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Show House itself benefits Cerebral Palsy of Westchester; a non-profit that has been working nonstop since 1949 to advance essential services to both children and adults suffering from cerebral palsy and other neurological disabilities. Defining several chronic circumstances, cerebral palsy entails the damage of a few specific segments within the brain – mostly pertaining to overall muscle development. With approximately 8,000 new infants being diagnosed every year, the services provided by Cerebral Palsy of Westchester are even more vital now than ever before. Every baby identified deserves the support, recreation, rehabilitation, vocational training, crucial educational services, and love that Cerebral Palsy of Westchester continually provides.

The Lilac Fairy - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Lilac Fairy is so special because she
represents a very important virtue. Her gift to the Princess is
Wisdom. Her fanciful pose shows her sprinkling fairy dust with a wand
which represents the action of providing wisdom and guidance.
Imagination, artistry and creativity all come from wisdom and are so
important to growing girls. The wisdom to know good from bad and right
from wrong will be so easy to learn when the guidance comes from a
beautiful fairy dressed in an amazing lilac flowing dress. Next to the
other faires she is the leaders and is depicted that way. She is
different from the others and she certainly stands out. 

"May wisdom guide you as a lantern in the dark" is the quotation paired with this
fairy ballerina.

Carabosse - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

Carabosse is the evil fairy that was angry that she was not invited to meet the baby princess with a special virtue. Although she is considered evil and sinister, she also represents a mischievous and curious side that all little princess' have. She is dark and a little wicked. Her dark ballet slipper and tights are so unlike the other fairy ballerinas so she stands out in a different way. She embodies power and mystery, which is clearly depicted in her slithery pose and curious posture.

The quotation she is paired with is "Here's to long naps and princely kisses"

The Fairy of Vitality - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Fairy of Vitality is the most whimsical and playful of all of the fairy ballerinas in the series. She is young at heart and dances to the beat of her own drum. The way her blue dress moves as she leaps with glee makes this wall decor so special. She represents the virtue of being carefree, confident, and comfortable in your own skin. Her hair floating behind her in a loose ponytail of curls as well as her leap of joy make this a hard piece to ignore. Any little princess can relate to the feeling that this fairy ballerina art demonstrates and that makes it so special.

The quotation that this fairy is paired with is:

"May you remain forever carefree as the wind".

The Fairy of Bravery - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Fairy of Bravery represents the virtue of being brave and confident. Young girls will know that nothing can stop them from fulfilling their dreams. The red color of this fairy ballerina's beautiful costume is vibrant and pops right of the wall like she is in motion. The movement is strong and represents bravery to the fullest. Her pose is strong and powerful which are both attributes that any little girl should have to grow into a young lady. This piece can be incorporated so nicely into a room with other pieces or on its own, see example in Aurora's Room.

"May your bravery be bold as a lion in youth" is the quotation that this fairy is paired with and it rings so true with the motivation of this collection. Not only is this fairy ballerina strong and beautiful, but she also represents a great message.

The Fairy of Songs - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Fairy of Songs is fun and playful. Her gift is that of song and eloquence. Having your own voice and knowing how to use it is so important for any young woman. Being proud of who you are can come out through song and words in such a lovely way. The fairy ballerina so beautifully plays a tune in this piece and this represents her gift of song. You can almost hear her sound and see her dance. She is as bright and yellow as sunshine and is so fun to look at. She stands proud and wants everyone to hear her loud and clear.

Any little princess would be singing with glee along side her fairy ballerina of songs.

The Fairy of Generosity represents the virtue of generosity. This is such an important virtue for little girls to grow up to have because being generous means that you are grateful and humble for every gift that you have. Her pose is demure and lady like and the stunning green color she is wearing sparkles like a brilliant emerald. Although it is so bright and colorful it is still calm and refined. Her simple stance is peaceful and kind. You can almost imagine her movement and choreigraphy to be just as composed and lovely. So many good things come from being generous and this fairy ballerina represents that.

The Fairy of Purity - The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Fairy Series

The Fairy of Purity represents the virtue of being pure and innocent. This teaches young girls to be humble and selfless in order to grow as respectable young woman. This can be incorporated nicely into any color scheme because it is painted with cool white and blue tones that would compliment any space nicely. This fairy ballerina's pose is so delicate and dainty.

"May your thoughts be as pure as freshly fallen snow"

is the quotation that this fairy is paired with and I think that is a wonderful message to send to girls. 

This fairy can be hung with the other fairies alongside it or alone above our signature Princess dresser. A sparkling Murano chandelier and gorgeous Aurora's bedding will pair nicely with it as well.

2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House - Made in America

The ZoyaB Collection is Made in America. With outsourcing often considered as the new standard of manufacturing, clients can find themselves pleasantly surprised to learn that all of the furniture I design is handmade right here in the United States. Personally, I find this extremely important; both in terms of enhancing our economic state, by supporting local factories, but also for the high safety standards that we have always enjoyed in our own products. Johnny's Room Video Released to Celebrate Columbus Day!

By now, the kids are back in school and hopefully settled into all their new classes. Education really is such an important thing – no one can take away what you’ve learned – you carry it with you all your life. Designing a nursery has a huge impact on the development of a child and so if even just a little bit of educational material is present in the room at a young age, it’s likely there will be a positive impact.

In honor of back-to-school time and Columbus Day today, I am releasing a video explaining the inspiration behind my 2006 Merrywood Greenwich Showhouse, “Johnny’s Room”. The video can be accessed below on YouTube, Vimeo, and the Rooms by ZoyaB website.

   

Back in 2006, the Merrywood Greenwich Showhouse sought to benefit the campaign to expand and upgrade The Greenwich Family YMCA. The mission statement of the Greenwich YMCA drives home the point of “nurturing the potential of our whole family”. I want to express full support of the Greenwich YMCA organization, as they provide an unparalleled environment when it comes to childcare and youth and family development. But I also wish to remind the public that education is a major part of the nurturing of the whole person – specifically the mind. It is never too early to have a history lesson. If educational materials surround a child from the time he/she was born, in his/her nursery for example, they can only be better equipped when they start school and will quickly become a well-rounded person into adulthood!

Using this core idea of education in ‘Johnny’s Room’, three of the walls contain murals that center upon American History – the Mayflower, Amerigo Vespucci and last but not least, Christopher Columbus. I wanted the walls to tell a story, give the viewer a feel of magic, and be very peaceful and dreamy, all while sticking to the nautical theme, seen in my use of color throughout, with a variety of soft blue hues.

The video tour describes inspiration for the other pieces in the room including the William Armoire from the ZoyaB Collection, my custom American-made luxury baby furniture line, and Johnny’s Ship Chandelier, one of the focal points of the room. Perhaps a little known fact is that Prince William, now Duke of Cambridge, was the inspiration behind the William Armoire – furniture fit for your little prince. Each child should feel that they have their own space that makes them feel like royalty. ‘Johnny’s Room’ has been featured in New York Spaces.

Catherine's Room - The Princess Room Video Released in Honor of Royal Wedding

It seems that everywhere you turn, there is another magazine cover featuring Kate Middleton and Prince William, or the Royal Wedding, in general. In fact, today is the 4 month anniversary of the wedding! Every high-profile media website publishes at least one new photo of Kate on their blog each day. The idea of “princess” has been brought back into the spotlight, having faded with the unfortunate death of Princess Diana. Little girls have a new idol – a young one at that – easier to identify with.

In 2006, I participated in The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey with ‘Catherine's Room - The Princess Room’. I knew the name ‘Catherine’ was fit for a princess. Catherine (Kate) Middleton is exactly who I had in mind when creating this room. So, in light of all the buzz around the Royal Wedding, I am releasing a video explaining how the room came together. The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey benefits the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ. Though my participation in the Showhouse was in 2006, I want to take the time now to express full support of the Cancer Center for all that they do in saving and extending lives, keeping up with scientific advancements, and providing and accumulating innovative research. For six years, the Designer Showhouse of New Jersey has displayed the work of fabulous interior designers for such a worthy cause.

Kate Middleton is a classic beauty and an inspiration for young girls everywhere. While it is probably a one-in-a-million chance that a young woman will become a princess, it is possible to make your daughter feel like one, by simply providing her with a room decorated with beauty, elegance, and whimsy. Filled with a feminine color palette of lavender, green, pink and floral rose patterns everywhere, ‘Catherine’s Room’ does just that.

The focal point of the room, which I imagine Princess Kate has something similar in her childhood or even current bedroom, is the Princess Bed from the ZoyaB Collection, my custom American-made luxury baby furniture line. The canopy bed was inspired from an original design owned by a 19^th-century baroness.

Educational value is also important to me and I tie it into the pieces in ‘Catherine’s Room’ with a series of needlepoint canvases, each depicting a different fairy tale that every little girl knows and loves: Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, The Wizard of Oz, and The Nutcracker. I hope that the artwork will evoke a curiosity in the child as well as a thirst for literature and knowledge of all kinds.

Ariel's Room Video Released in Support of 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse

Can you believe another year has passed and it’s Hampton Designer Showhouse time again? If you have not yet been out to visit this year’s house, you must, before it closes on Sunday September 4^th. As usual, the work of the 25 or so participating designers is absolutely spectacular.

Back in 2007, I participated in the Showhouse with Ariel’s Room – Under the Sea, inspired by The Little Mermaid – both the Disney classic and the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. In honor of this year’s house and to support the Southampton Hospital, I am releasing a video explaining the inspiration behind Ariel’s Room. Every year the design community comes together to contribute to such a wonderful organization that saves thousands of lives and provides the community with the utmost care. I am really blown away by how community driven the Hospital is as well, and it ties directly into what I’m inspired by in my own designs. A strong sense of family is important to establish during childhood. If a sense of community starts at home, your child might be more inclined to extend love to their community as an adult, just as the Hampton Designer Showhouse does with the Southampton Hospital. It’s so nice to see good works being carried over into the interior design field.

You can see more in my video above, but I kept this idea of family and close-knit bonds in mind when designing ‘Ariel’s Room’. I included a Needlepoint Art piece depicting Neptune protecting his daughters, each of them holding a special item representing their unique significance in their father’s life. For the basis of the design of the room, I was of course immediately inspired by the beach town of Bridgehampton, the whimsical nature of mermaids and seascapes coming to mind. Growing up in the Ukraine, one of my favorite fairy tales was “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Anderson. For my daughter, the Disney version of the classic represented a more fun and adventurous narrative, and so I wanted to incorporate both feelings into the design.

The Hampton Designer Showhouse opened on Sunday, July 24^th and will run until Sunday, September 4^th at 1224 Scuttle Hole Road, Bridgehampton, NY. It is open daily, Monday through Sunday, 11AM to 5PM. Admission is $30 and includes a journal. Raising needed funds for The Toy Museum of NY

Hello and Happy Holidays, Last summer, I had a pleasure to design a window for the Toy Museum of NY fundraiser in Southampton. They are a great organization headed by Marlene Hochman, the founder. First established in 1999 as The Doll and Toy Museum of NYC, they changed their name to The Toy Museum of NY in spring 2009 with the coveted distinction, by the New York State Department of Education, as the holder of the only New York Charter for a toy museum. They are a certified 501 (c) 3 non-profit educational ‘traveling museum’ featuring touring exhibitions and educational programs. Their mission is to educate the public on the importance of dolls and toys in our culture, history and art.  
The Museum is funded in part by the generous support of individual donors, The Department of Cultural Affairs, NY State Education Department, NYC Youth and Community Development, Astoria Federal Savings and Con Edison.
